During my Friday lunch, I was contemplating what gets employees excited to go to work. I canvassed my office (mostly software developers) and here is what they shared about their inspirations:
- Working with a team that is excited to engage on projects
- Learning new things
- Seeing an idea or concept through to fruition
- Opportunity to engage with co-workers
- Light bulb moments - opportunities to try out new ideas
- The work environment - a comfortable and casual environment that allows me to explore and test innovative approaches to problems
- A challenge - I want to push my skills to the limits and test the possibilities
I am blessed to work with an amazing team of people that are excited to share their ideas and engage on challenging work. I need to make sure that as a leader I continue to build an environment that keeps the team motivated to come to work. It is important to take the time to talk with every team member and make sure we are giving them an environment that inspires them.
The best way to find out what motivates your team - ask them! I would love to hear your thoughts.

I appreciate that you are asking about what inspires your workforce rather than what motivates. Building inspiration will have everlasting effects while motivation usually only leads to short term gains. What inspires me is knowing that I’m part of an excellent leadership team. It creates the desire to continue to contribute my thoughts and ideas to build a strong organization for the long haul.

I would add to that list the feeling of your work being valued by others. Makes it easy to work hard when you know that other people appreciate what you do.

I'd add the opportunity to work on networks and equipment that I wouldn't have access to in any other way. For me it's satellites. Out of your list I enjoy the casual work environment and ability to explore standard practices from different fields and see how they can enhance my work.
